Among all the women’s clothes the dress is the garment that wins the championship of practicality, the dream of any woman, its secret,, because there are versions of dresses for all occasions, so, if you know how and when to  wear them, you can wear them for practically any occasion: as party clothes, work uniform, casual clothes, clothing, clothing, gala…

I have thought a lot about the structure of this post because it is not simple, too many elements to consider and many possible starting points from which to address them.

I choose a mixture between the different possibilities when it comes to sorting the dresses, because I think it is the closest thing to the “real” way of using them, the models of dresses are no longer intended for a single function or for a single fabric, so much less for a single occasion of use.

First the Silhouettes and the dress shape that generate, then the most inhabital Models with their own name according to their form, then the dresses according to the Taste that characterizes them and that defines their style and finally an exception of Fabric.

La silueta (la forma), el modelo (la estructura), el gusto (el Estilo) y el tejido… exploremos las posibilidades de cada uno.

The silhouette (the shape), the model (the structure), the taste (the style) and fabric… let’s explore the possibilities of each.

1 The silhouette

Refers to the shape of the dress and classifies it from a “geometric” point of view and choosing silhouettes that suit you are a guarantee of success in the way you dress.

1.1 Straight

This silhouette has no secrets, pure and simple geometry the essence of the shape, practical and simple for all occasions of use and in long and short dresses.

You will find it many times with an added belt to point at the waist and sometimes a side opening for easy entry.

Although you find it hard to imagine, a basic silhouette like this integrates with party clothes if you need to keep your young style and do not feel like giving up your own style or dressing up, Military style boots, learn to combine this accessory.

1.2 Evasé

Straight silhouette with slightly wider background, only with variations in terms of length.

Casual dresses, fashion and work dresses, perfect also in long dresses, but the best results in long knee and minidresses. If you want to learn more about how to use this length to your advantage, you will be interested in the post  How to dress well with midi skirt according to your style and occasion, you will only have to apply the reasoning to the characteristics of a dress.

1.3 Tube

The silhouette that exhibits the curves, without complex and without excuses, attached to the body. Most of the time this silhouette is used to make dresses with stretch fabrics that enhance its shape, but it is not therefore a guarantee of elegance, quite the opposite, puts it at risk.

When the fabric is not elastic, you will find it in dresses that use cuts and tweezers to draw the figure, and it is very practical with the extra kilos, but beware, it is the proportions of the figure that you must take care of, because they are a guarantee of success if you choose this silhouette ofmaximum versatility: for a  cocktail or for the office, protagonists of many  fashion proposals curvy  and large sizes.

1.4 Trapeze

The silhouette of freedom, more typical of warm temperatures, nevertheless achieves the best results when used with during the cold months, accompanied by thick stockings and a multitude of accessoriesthat enhance the top of the silhouette.

It needs to be worn in short stretches, so it always works best on mini or midi dresses.

1.5 Empire

This silhouette has a cut or interruption under the chest that defines it, although after cutting, the dress may have different lines depending on the model and fabric used.

It is the perfect silhouette also if you need large sizes and if you have a lot of chest, the favorite of curvy girls   for very special occasions, you will understand it better in the post How to disguise the belly, practical tips to help you.

Regarding women with standard sizes it becomes dresses that encompass female figures of many types, long or short and for any time of the day and any occasion of use.

There is also “high” version, in the upper or lower left image, with the notch in a position between the waist and under the chest.

1.6 20’s

The twenties silhouette not difficult to wear, rather the opposite, to be linear and continuous, what is difficult is to find women who feel good. The dresses are straight and if you cut, nothing that reminds the female shapes, hence the difficulty.

These dresses do not forgive, no clemency with the feminine forms, so to wear them it is essential to have an androgynous physique, without curves and above all with a flat belly, because it is at this point that the dress rests on the hip.

My advice is not to get dressed if you don’t have the right physique, the result is terrible.

Personal Stylist is the Person Image Consultancy service of MD Personal Shopper that will help you get to know yourself better and discover the silhouettes that best suit your physical structure, which is the key to choosing the garments that best suit you

1.7 50’s

The feminine silhouette par excellence has a marked waist, and it is the one where its strength and beauty is. Cozy and powerful, it has an adorable air of other times I invite you to boost with belts.

The result is best with short dresses and midi, not only because they respect the origin of the silhouette, but also because you get dresses with the best proportions.

Avoid it if your legs are too short and be careful if you have them long and leave a lot of legs out, it can be very vulgar. It is best to learn from the proportions 50’s: skirt under the knee or a little longer.

If you’re going to be a godmother at your child’s wedding, this might be the silhouette you’re looking for, but you’ll also find many more possibilities in Total godmother’s wedding look – taste and style.

1.8 Mermaid

These dresses have a narrow and very marked silhouette, usually attached to the body, but from the knee they have a more or less pronounced output depending on the fabric and model. It is at this point the siren effectoccurs, which can be more or less obvious: it fits like the tube silhouette to the knee and then zoom out in a light or markedlyevasé effect. The effect can be smooth or very obvious.

Casual women’s clothing is also used, but they are more common amongparty clothes and events, in fact, it is the star silhouette at many weddings, although the silhouette is not the only thing you should have under control on these occasions when you are very exposed, readingWedding Day Protocol, the ultimate Guide, in any case, always keep in mind that this silhouette is best expressed in long or semi long dresses.

2 The Model

Refers to the structure of the dress, its details and the reasons why the dress has its own name.

2.1 Shirt dress

Multifunction open dresses with shirt structure, although with possible closures and necklines, it also exists in polo version. It is essential to adapt the length to the characteristics of the figure to achieve good results, the keys you will find in How to get a casual woman’s look, youwill see that a shirt dress fits perfectly in this style.

The fabric defines season and occasion of use, can be anyone, although they are mostly dressing for everyday use, casual or professional, but lately, you see even table dresses made of sequins.

2.2 Cape/Bias Cut

Layered dresses are usually cut to the biies, i.e. with the fabric diagonally. Narrow to the waist, the dresses to layer change radically from this point depending on the fabric in which it is made, it can be with pleated fabric or with a single piece of fabric, a “layer”.

The “flying” effect makes these dresses have a movement. Spectacular day and night.

2.3 Draped

Draping use the fabric to modify the final shape of a dress. Two possibilities: a simple effect, such as “adjusting” the dress, for which tension is necessary (the most casual version of this effect), or large amounts of fabric whose leftover is “hanged” in eye-catching prom dresses.

In draped dresses you must know how to choose the point at which the draping releases its volume, because it must match the part of your body where that  volume is necessary or makes sense for aesthetic reasons, but will only be fabric of more than one thing that is left over and annoying, a disaster.

If the time comes to attend an event and you do not know very well which dress to choose for the occasion call me, my services Events and More, offers 360º advice to transform your doubts into a perfect look, whatever the occasion you face.

2. 4 Gathers and folds

The dresses have frowns and folds to increase the volume of certain areas, either for aesthetic reasons or for reasons of capacity and volume. Folds and frunce have similar characteristics, but the end result is completely different, although neither of them generates tension, both “excesses”.

If you have a lot of chest or you have a lot of kilos left over, be careful with the dresses of this structure when the frowns are in the abdomen area, and do not forget to check the result in a mirror, especially at thewaist and back..

This silhouette is very successful when it comes to attending a wedding guest. Check out your look on What to avoid if you’re invited to a wedding..

2.5 Crossed

In this model a front overlaps the opposite one. It always gives better results with medium weight or knitted fabrics, but at both ends or that fit the body a lot or that the fabric has room to create folds.

Simple but very effective structure, which generates dresses with room to dress women with very different bodies. It also has the advantage that it fits your body over time… but only to a certain extent!

When you start to get the feeling that all your dresses are the same and you’re not sure what you have and what you don’t, it’s time to make a Wardrobe Background, the objective and professional analysis from which a new style comes, or the possibility of varying the silhouette you’ve been trusting for years and start to get bored.

2.6 Ruffles

A dress can have ruffles or “be” made of ruffles,  those are made up of layers of overlapping ruffles, and those with ruffles applied are usually made of light or rigid fabrics such as taffeta, to create a solid structure, and the ruffles  are usually applied to certain parts of the dress in the same fabric, although this is never a rule.

Those with ruffles applied decoratively, anywhere in the dress.

If you have small proportions and are looking for a dress that will win you in presence, a ruffled dress could be the secret weapon you need to be the perfect guest at a wedding.

2.7 Oversized

Large dresses are completely different if they are made with light, drop-free fabrics such as cotton gauze,  which swells (perfect for overlapping with patterned fabrics), which have  “falling-effect”, made with  viscous or silk, or if we are talking about thicker cotton fabrics, which gives way to large structured and “crunchy” garments,  creating huge and very applianceous  oversized dresses. If you choose the model well, you will have very interesting fashion dresses.

Just because they’re big dresses doesn’t mean they’re appropriate if you wear them for big sizes, the better the opposite, if you’re a curvy girl, these are probably the least suitable dresses for you that you can find.-

2.8 Foulard

This structure of dresses consists of individual pieces of fabric that are used independently, as foulards, to cover areas of the body, then join, or not, together.

70’s and 30’s soul in these simple and sexy dresses, which are not advisable if you have a lot of chest. From this structure, you can generate beautiful dresses of very different styles and occasions of use, but your best expression you get in free time and evening events, in fact, are the best candidates for dresses for evening events

2.9 Fluid

Elongated and uncomplicated dresses, few variants in the construction, only changes the result according to the fabric.

They are usually made with silk or viscous fabrics that have a lot of fall, sine qua non condition for the dress to be fluid and have movement.

In this usual format is an attractive and surprise-free dress, perfect to use in case of emergency, both to go to the super in flipflops, and to attend a relaxed party with sneakers or even as a Boho taste wedding dress, the new hippie inspiration.

To emphasize the tunic effect, sometimes they have a waist marked with a drawstring or elastic.

2.10 Pleated

It is a way of treating the fabric by cutting it diagonally and planting it so that it has small open pleats.

With this fabric are made dresses whole, bell-shaped, or used only for certain parts of the dress such as the skirt, so the silhouette always depends on the chosen model.

2.11 Mini

These dresses are of any color and fabric shape, and their only determining feature is the length, so they can belong to any style and have any silhouette.

I advise you to use them only if you have legs well turnedand in no case of extremevolume, either by excess or by default.

There are many women obsessed with having very thin legs, not realizing what, the separation space that is created between them can be as unattractive as the constant rubbing of the thighs.

Very attractive with garments with sleeves, jackets or coats, the same length as the dress.

2.12 Kimono y caftan

I have included them in this cast, because their forms, although not typical of the West, are present and influence many dresses of frequent use in our day to day, always keep them in mind, especially on specialoccasions and during the holidays.

2.13 Abstract and Asymmetrical

These dresses are found in our wardrobes the greatest for the times indirectly and unrecognizably, only an inspiration that is part of the dresses in detail or in the volume in general, but that is essential when it comes to understanding the structure of the models that triumph today.

3 The Taste/Style

Refers to dresses from the point of view of taste, a changing concept and always in question.

Of course, they do not fit all, they are countless, so there are the most common ones and those who have the most presence lately in fashion, of course all very debatable

If you are interested in any specific one, write me an email, I will incorporate it into this post for you as soon as possible.

3.1 French

The spirit of the field in simple dresses, but also provocative, a naif innocence with double meaning, almost always made in polka dot prints, small flowers or similar fantasies.

3.2 Bon ton

The Bon Ton taste is also very French, in fact, it takes its name from theGazette du Bon Ton, born in the early twentieth century, was intended to move away from the taste of American magazines such as Vogue or Harper’s  Bazaar, focused on consumption, and offer a more elitist fashion proposal.

His spirit has changed a lot over time, maintained that elitist spirit, but it ismore urban, sophisticated, but also practical, and retains its success thanks to its incorporation into the professional world and its flexible spirit.

Feminine but practical, with modern garments capable of integrating into the professional Environment of New York, in which they are very successful, or in others of a more classic nature. Trad Ivy Style will transport you to the advantages and particularities of this style.

The  Midi length has a lot of success in these dresses, and is very useful when we talk dresses that are worn as work uniforms, but also at special events, when you need a dress that has a length that you can “trust”.

3.3 Romántic

The dresses of romantic taste have all their energies concentrated in volume, soft effects and decorative details such as folds and small frowns, with baroque results and “sweet” of undoubted attractiveness.

Tweezers and prints help create this environment.

3. 4 Lingerie

The lingerie dress has been one of the stars of the women’s wardrobe for its versatility and ability to travel from day to night with just changing some accessories, a luxury also available to everyone, because these hugely simple dresses, exist in very accessible alternatives.

You probably have one, but it’s not so easy to know how to transform it for a thousand different moments: with sweater and boots in the office, with a transparent blouse underneath for a romantic date, with …

3. 5 Princess

Tulle and lace, these are the dresses that keep a wake of the stardust, so that many women can use them, if they do not have the opportunity to wear them, they dream it!

These dresses almost always at special events and occasions of use are made with spectacular or very scenic fabrics, and often have structures like corsets to support them.

If you intend to enjoy the romantic taste that lace wears in its DNA, you will find a lot of useful information in the post How to wear Playing with the lace, dresses, the guide for any girl who will never leave romanticism at home.

3. 6 Boho or Hippie style

They’re at their best and they don’t look like they want to disappear.

Natural and light materials and handcrafted-looking details along with small, organic-inspired prints such as flowers, top off this taste between bohemian and hippie.

This Boho taste  will disappear over time, but right now it is one of the most powerful trends, and summer the perfect time to enjoy it, in the post Customize your Boho style according to the occasionyou have the keys to squeeze it to the fullest.

The hippie taste always returns, every time in a renewed proposal, and will return again and again in different versions, hippie garments and accessories are always a good investment with a view to the future.

3.7 Baby Doll

Mini dresses and an excess of folds and jars, mini ruffles and small tweezers, accompany this taste in which, in addition to the dress, what matters is attitude. The sleeves are usually short or very short, the softcolors and important volumes, often even increased with a can- can.

3. 8 Essential

The “Rational” taste dresses do not stop in decorative effects and that is what gives them value, if they have any detail, it must be justified by a practical need, or at least have a use, something that gives meaning to their presence!

The fabrics are austere and with minimal aesthetic contribution, which does not mean that the final result is basic dresses… an art!

In most cases they are modern dresses of abstract type or very simple.

3.9 30’s & 40’s

I encompass the style because its impact on the trends of recent years is less, although this could change with a flicker, so they will have a post of their own if necessary.

Their silhouettes, details, structures and accessories “plan” on the dresses of this post leaving the essence of the women who wore them.

Those “rules” and that taste  or rather what they represent, still value every time you have to go to a cocktail, so I advise you to read How to dress a Cocktail attire the occasion can arise at any time.

3.10 Knitted fabric/Jersey

I have made a specific section for knitted dresses to show their role in our   wardrobes, which means being able to dress with a unique garment, a single piece, and its essential fashion presence in any woman’s wardrobe today.

The point is a necessity in each and every one of the looks you dress with, you use it in loose garments, but its best version you discover when you live it integrated into a fashion trend, as in the Folk Style a booming trend in with its thick boots and large sweaters.

3.11 Sports

Knitted dresses are dresses undoubtedly useful as sportswear  for any time of the day, you use them without thinking, but do not think that their world comes down to going for a walk or shopping, as soon as you integrate them into any look of your day to day with accessories, you have occasion to check their  versatility.
